2009 Mystic River Summer Youth Rugby

MALDEN, MA – For the past three years Mystic River has run a Summer Youth Rugby Program. The program is primarily aimed at introducing local children to rugby, and to provide them and their parents a greater understanding of the sport. A non-contact version of the game called American Flag Rugby is played which is similar to Flag Football.

This version of rugby is designed specifically for the American child; no experience necessary, fully inclusive, and with a level of structure and discipline that Americans have come to expect from recreational sports. In this game, kids play a version of rugby where the defense removes the ball carrier’s Velcro flag instead of creating a tackle situation.

Coaches are required to complete the Rookie Rugby certification program provided by USA Rugby. We plan to have a ratio of at least 1 coach per 8 kids. The children range in age from 6-14, and the program is open to both boys and girls. Each participant will receive a Mystic Youth Rugby jersey.

This is all about children having fun and running with a ball. The major reason for local program success to date is that it’s fun! Unlike some sports that kids participate in, American Flag Rugby gets every child actively involved. This is wildly attractive to kids who previously spent long days in an outfield or goal box. Everyone touches the ball in rugby and everyone can score points, kids of all ages can play together and skills required are inclusive of a wide range of athletic abilities.

Mystic River Summer Youth Rugby

MALDEN, MA – This third year program runs Thursday nights from June 19 – July 31 (from 7pm-8:30pm). Last year’s program was a major success as we had over 32 Mystics aged 6-14 wearing blue and playing rugby!

We play a form of non-contact rugby based on American Flag Rugby rules. It is similar to touch rugby and is a great opportunity for boys and girls aged 6-14 to learn basic rugby skills while running around and having fun.

Last season ended with a Jamboree that we hosted at Pine Banks Park where over 80 kids participated in a number of matches. Please forward this information to family and friends with children that may be interested.
