Mystic 2nd XV Win Third Straight

MANCHESTER, NH – Following the nail-biting victory by the First XV, the Mystic B’s took the field to take on Amoskeag. Mystic forwards provided pressure from the get go, hammering into their New Hampshirian counterparts. Scrumhalf Peter Chung did a superb job of getting the ball to a hungry Mystic backline led by captain Bobby Ankenbauer, who were able to find the gaps, weaving through Amoskeag’s defenses to touch the ball down between the posts.

With the help of some A-Side starters, Amoskeag began to fight back punching through for a few tries of their own. But the Mystics rose to the challenge and never let up, taking their third win of the season 37-17.

Late Mystic Rally Robs Amoskeag

MANCHESTER, NH – The weather was perfect, the field conditions were perfect. The Mystics performance in the first half… not so much. Amoskeag came out strong, taking advantage of a static Mystic defensive line and scoring three tries while conceding only one penalty to lead 19-3 at the half. Mystic Head Coach Scot Durkin made no great motivational speeches during the break, and instead opted to let the lads sort it out themselves.

The second half saw a complete reversal of fortunes. Trying desperately to claw their way back into the match, the Mystics constantly drove the ball down field and kept Amoskeag on their heels. Three tries from flanker Sean Burgess put the Mystics within one point and the conversion from Derrick Roma would give them a 20-19 lead. A fourth try from Dan Mayton in the final minutes of a nail-biting half would secure the win for the Mystics 25-19.

Mystics Blank Worcester in Week 2

PINE BANKS – In Week 2 of the regular season, Mystic River took the field against Worcester in a match that could only be called “one-sided”. The Mystics completely dominated the Worcester scrum and the Mystic back line was able to penetrate often. Eleven tries were scored in the shutout victory, including two from veteran hooker Jim Calmas and another from Dimitri Efthimiou, his third of the season. Mystic flyhalf Derrick Roma slotted seven conversions to add to the final 69-0 win.

The Second XV were no less impressive as they took it to Worcester and allowed only one converted try for a 43-7 win.

Mystic River Drowns Yankees in Opener

PINE BANKS – As Tropical Storm Hannah covered the northeast in rain and oppressive humidity, the Mystics opened their 2008 season against the Connecticut Yankees. Much of the first half went back and forth as both teams tried to find their groove, but converted tries by Bill Dow and rookie winger Dimitri Efthimiou allowed the Mystics to go up 14-nil at the half. The Mystics didn’t let up in the second half, outscoring the Yankees five tries to two, including a try scored by Tom Collins off the kickoff to start the half. The Mystics took the match 43-10.

Led by captain Bobby Ankenbauer and “Man of the Match” outhalf Jack Mahoney, the Mystic Second XV also gave a good show, shutting out the Yankees 33-0 in the second game of the day.
