Mystics Blank Hounds in NE 10’s Final

Mystic River continues to dominate the summer rugby schedule with another 1st place trophy at the Acton 10’s tournament. Led by repeat tournament MVP David “Sliver” Barry, the Mystics demolished the competition with wins of 51-5 over Middlesex College, 57-7 over Old Gold 2, 36-7 over Boston and 57-0 over Providence to set up a final with cross-town rival Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

The first half was marked by tough team defense and bone crunching hits by Mystic Jake Sprague. It was only a matter of time before the Mystics hit their top form and phenomenal play by scrumhalf Alex O’Mahoney got the boys up and running. Burgers Bartlett, Jake and Alex Brussard dominated the Hounds up front, and Evin O’Driscoll, Sliver, Adnan Kawuma and Dimitri “Greek Olive” Efthimiou turned on the jets for 21 unanswered points and the 1st place trophy.

The young guns of the Mystic 2’s took a tough loss in the Plate finals 12-5 to South Shore, narrowly missing a clean sweep for the Mystics.

Congrats to the whole first team on their championship win… and thanks to all the Big Blue supporters and friends for bringing the true Mystic spirit to win the day on all counts.

Mystic River defeats Kinsale RFC 47-20

MALDEN, MA – An entertaining match between Mystic River and Kinsale RFC played before 100 or so spectators on a sunny, warm late afternoon/early evening.

Spectators were treated to a bag pipe/band introduction, presentation by both team’s presidents, short exchange by Malden and Melrose’s mayors and the assistant mayor of Kinsale.

The decision was made to play four 20 minute quarters allowing for water breaks so both sides would not succumb to the heat. What was supposed to be a friendly match, quickly turned into a fierce competition.

Kinsale moved ahead 10-0 but after a few breaks, Mystic moved ahead 21-13 at half-time on three converted tries.

The second half was all Mystic River, running in four more tries and three conversions to one converted try by Kinsale.

Mystic Defeats #4 Baltimore Chesapeake

BALTIMORE, MD – The Mystics dug deep and survived a scare against eRugbyNews #4 ranked Baltimore after losing a seven point lead as regulation time expired. In overtime, the boys didn’t panic and returned to the game plan, responding early with a Matt Digby try to take the lead back. Baltimore responded with a penalty kick to come within four points.

Again the Mystics found themselves defending their own goal line with no time on the clock but deployed an attacking defense and turned the ball over to kick to touch and secure the win 25-21.

Now the Mystics will travel to South Carolina in three weeks for their second straight Sweet 16 appearance and hope to get a strong Mystic contingent there for support as they battle for a spot in the National Final 4!
