Mystics Win 2nd Straight CAN-AM Title

SARANAC LAKE, NY – The Mystic River Rugby Club continued its successful summer campaign by winning the 37th Annual Can-Am 15s Tournament on Sunday behind a true team effort.

This marks the second straight summer that the Mystics won the annual Can Am Tournament. Rising national star Adnan Kawuma and Can Am Tournament MVP Jason Carton turned in outstanding performances.

The Mystics defeated Morris 48-21 in the opening game of the day before besting the Penn State Alumni 34-22 in pool play. In the semifinal, the Mystics defeated Caves & Ditches 29-15.

The Mystics were the last team standing after finishing off Buffalo in the final by a score of 30-5.

Mystics 7s Advance to National Sweet 16

NEWPORT, RI – In their inaugural season of entering a premier 7s qualifier team, Mystic River Rugby Club has earned a spot in the National Sweet 16 playoffs. Entering the NRU playoffs as the #5 seed, the Mystics were able to advance to the semi-final with wins over Long Island 35-17 and Boston B 56-0. The Mystics led perennial contender Boston 10-0 at half but suffered a collapse of play in the second period allowing three tries to lose 17-21. In the all important consolation final against NYAC II to determine who goes on to the national playoffs, the Mystics found themselves trailing early  but rallied behind the strong play of Adnan Kawuma, Trevor McKenzie and captain Dimitri Efthimiou to secure a trip to San Francisco with a 35-5 victory.

Mystics Win New England 10s

ACTON, MA – The Mystic River Rugby Club won its 4th New England (Acton) 10s Championship in 5 years on Sunday behind an impressive display of skills by captain Dimitri Efthimiou, Adnan Kawuma and Mystic tournament MVP Karl Darragh. The Mystics defeated the Vandals 12-7 in the opening game of the day before getting heated up and defeating Seacoast Alumni 42-7 in pool play. In the Quarter Final, the Mystics demolished host Old Gold 57-5 and then defeated UConn 38-0 to set up a championship with Durham who are on tour from the UK and had previously defeated Mystic in the Middlesex 10s championship Friday night.

Given the opportunity for redemption, the Mystics rose to the occasion. Down 3-5 at the half on a nifty Karl Darragh drop goal, unselfish and inspired overall play led to two tries finished off by Nate Fox and the final  result of 15-5.

Mystic U-19 Take Seacoast 7s Title

PEMBROKE, NH – The Mystic River U-19 Rugby Team won their second title of their inaugural season by dominating the opposition in the Third Annual Seacoast 7s Rugby Tournament.

Led by Mass U-19 Select Side players Aaron Smith, Brian Garey, Matt Maloney and Mike Rudzinsky, the Mystic Eagles beat Worcester 44-7 and U. Maine 28-12 to earn a spot in the U-19 finals where they beat Seacoast by 38-5 to win the cup. Former USA Eagle U-17 Captain Alex Brussard also had a great performance, playing for the Mystic’s U-19, Open, Social and ‘Sumo’ sides. Special Mention to young Max Rudzinsky who ran touch judge for eight matches.
