Playing at their home ground, Mystic’s backs were virtually unstoppable in the first 40 minutes against New York, exploding for 45 points in the first half. Mystic extended their lead to 50-0 before running on some young subs. New York also figured out a little of what they needed to do, but it was too late. Mystic, led by Chris Tofte and Derrick Roma in the backs, and Chris O’Donnell up front, won 50-24. “New York didn’t give up and they certainly kept coming at us,” said Mystic president Ted Vassallo. “Our backs were really good in the first half. On the turf it’s tough to match their speed.”

Mystics Claim #1 NERFU Playoff Seed

HARTFORD, CT – The boys traveled to Hartford on Saturday, trailing the Boston Irish Wolfhounds by 3 points in the standings and tied with South Shore, who owned the head to head tie-breaker. Shortly after kickoff, extremely heavy snow began falling and play deteriorated in the blizzard-like conditions. Having put up 3 tries and knowing they needed the bonus point, the Mystics fiercely attacked the Hartford goal line but to their credit, Hartford held strong and denied the bonus. Mystic prevailed 19-10 but were unsure where that put them in the final standings.

Then the news came in… New Haven, well suited to wet weather rugby, was able to upset South Shore 26-7. And Boston was able to hold off the Hounds 3-0 in icy rain. The Hounds got the loss bonus point, which brought them even with Mystic in the final standings, but the Mystics 40-22 defeat of the Hounds in Week 4 gave them the tie-breaker advantage and sole claim to the #1 playoff seed!!

Now, the Mystics get a crossover BYE and will play again when they HOST the NRU Finals at Pine Banks Nov 19-20 to determine seeding for the spring CR4 crossovers with MARFU.

Mark November 19 and 20 in BLUE on all of your calendars and plan on supporting the boys as they attempt to win the Northeast Championship two years in a row!!

Mystics Defeat Hounds to Win 2011 Briar Cup

PINE BANKS PARK, MA – Mystic River and The Boston Irish Wolfhounds battled on Saturday for the first chance to engrave their names on the Briar Cup. The Briar Cup will be awarded to the winner of this cross-town rival match each year and displayed in the victor’s home pub in Boston.

The Wolfhounds used their dominant size and power to maul through the Mystics forwards for two early tries and a 12-0 lead. However, the Mystics backs had yet to be heard from. When they finally got their hands on the ball, it was lights out for the Hounds as the Mystics blazed their way to 33 unanswered points behind 3 tries from Mystic Man of the Match, Chris Tofte, along with a try each for Evin O’Driscoll, Adnan Kawuma, and Nate Fox. When the dust had settled, the Mystics cruised to a 40-22 final win, the first Briar Cup Championship and bragging rights too.
