Led by sevens captain Dimitri Efthimiou and the player/coach pairing of Kayne Bubb and Evin O’Driscoll, a combined men’s and college team played some dominant rugby on its way to winning the Middlesex Sevens tournament. More than 20 players made it up to Woburn to play under Mike Bozza, who stepped in as manager for the day’s proceedings.

Mystics Falter in Elite 8
For the 3rd straight season, Mystic River Rugby Club earned a spot in the top eight DI teams in the country. This year, they defeated the Atlanta Renegades in dramatic fashion. After trailing 0-10 early on, the Mystics fought back to take a 12-10 lead behind the boot of flyhalf Paul Penman’s four penalty kicks. Atlanta answered back with two kicks of the own to retake the lead 12-16 with no time remaining. On the last play of the game, winger Nate Fox was able to storm down the sidelines shedding tackles for an emphatic try for the Mystic win 17-16!

Mystic River Rugby Club has secured their spot in an unprecedented 5th straight USA Rugby DI National Sweet 16 by defeating Schuylkill River 28-25 at Pine Banks Park Saturday.

Paced by 11 points from the boot of 17-year-old hooker Chris Laughlin, Mystic River defeated the Boston Irish Wolfhounds 21-7 to win the Northeast DI Club Championship. BIW led 7-0 for much of the first half, as the Wolfhounds forwards did a superb job disrupting Mystic possession in the breakdown. But some refinements up front opened up the game a little bit, and Mystic pressure forced penalties that Laughlin was only too happy to convert. The hooker hit three penalties, and then converted one of the two Mystic tries.
