Mystic Youth Rugby kicked off our 15th season on June 21st with close to 150 kids aged 5-18. Our co-ed flag rugby and middle school tackle programs train Mon/Wed from 6:30-8pm. And our High School Varsity and JV boys train Tue/Thu from 6:30-8pm. Feel free to stop by and watch the next generation of Mystics.
Mystic Men’s Summer 7’s has been full speed ahead with multiple Premier and Open sides training Tue/Thu from 8-9:30 at Pine Banks. The Mystic Premier side has already been invited to the USA National Rugby 7s Invitational in Seattle, WA on the weekend of August 13th which is this year’s version of a National Championship!
On the weekend of 6/26, Mystic River had 12 sides play in local tournaments! Mystic River’s two premier sides went to the Bayville 7s in Long Island, the first event of the Northeast Sevens Championship Series (NSCS), where our top side finished 2nd out of 8 teams. Mystic also had two sides play in the NERFU 7s hosted by Boston at Union Point in Weymouth where we won the Cup Championship! That same weekend we had 8 Mystic Youth teams, from “Mini Gulls” to Varsity High School Boys, playing at a youth jamboree in Wrentham!
Our High School Varsity & JV sides both went undefeated on the weekend and through those 7 wins, a collective 37 tries were scored. The development of our young players continues to build up the Club as several players on the Men’s and U19 squad have come through the youth program.
On Saturday, July 10th, Mystic River sent two premier sides and an open side to Saratoga 7s, which was the second leg of the NSCS competition. We also participated in a youth rugby jamboree at Marshfield High School on the same day. Mystic fielded sides from our “Mini Gulls” all the way up to our Varsity High School Boys, with multiple matches for each age group.
Mystic’s Prem 1 side came in 2nd and the Prem 2 side finished in 4th in the NSCS bracket at Saratoga, while the Mystic Open side placed 3rd in their bracket. Back in Marshfield, Mystic’s Varsity U19 side finished in 1st again, continuing to build momentum on the year.
Looking ahead, Mystic River hosts the 3rd leg in the NSCS competition at Pine Banks on Saturday, July 17th with matches beginning at 11am ET. We hope you can make it out for a great day of top level 7s!
The Club can always use assistance with setting up, working the BBQ/Concessions, and cleaning up. Please reach out to Nate Jakaitis or Peter Haxton if you are available to help or if you have any questions.
Mystic River will host another day of youth rugby at Pine Banks on Saturday, July 24th. This Youth Rugby Jamboree will feature full MYRO competition by age group (K-2, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th Flag and Middle School Tackle). This is the final youth jamboree of the summer before the Bay State Games, which will be held on Saturday, July 31st in Weymouth at Union Point. More details to come and volunteers will definitely be needed for this one too! Please contact Craig Weeks if you are interested in helping out or have questions!
GO BLUE!!
