This past Saturday, both Mystic teams were on the road for league matches, while the Old Boys capped off their season against Boston. The Division 1 side defeated Boston RFC 87-0 in an ARP match, improving their record to 3-2. However, Mystic’s Division 2 Barbarians did not fare so well on the road against Worcester; the Barbarians lost 39-12, adding their first tally to the loss column, setting them at 4-1 so far this fall.
The Mystics came out firing against Boston RFC, and they did not let up the entire match. Because Boston struggled to maintain possession and Mystic played high-pressure defense, there was no opportunity for Boston to put together any threatening attack. Thanks to Mystic’s lock-down defense and their ability to stay patient in attack, they were able to score 14 tries on the day. The tries were scored by wing Vini Daley (3), fullback Jared Collinson (3), center Alatasi Tupou (2), wing Chris Frazier (2), flanker John Sullivan, center Evin O’Driscoll, fullback Nick Fujiwara, and scrumhalf Adnan Kawuma.
Prior to the ARP match, the Old Boys played their last game of the fall and, unfortunately, fell to Boston’s Old Boys in a hard-fought battle.
The Division 2 Mystic Barbarians traveled to Worcester for a match between the two unbeaten teams in NERFU Division 2. While the Barbarians were able to match the intensity of their competition early in the match, Worcester scored first after being awarded a penalty try during a 5 meter scrum. Worcester converted the try and then added on a penalty conversion shortly after, taking the lead 10-0. The Barbarians responded when fullback Mike Spiro found a hole in the defense and scored. Flyhalf Stephen Diamantopolous went on to convert the try and narrow the lead to 10-7. Just before halftime, Worcester slotted another penalty, increasing their lead, 13-7.
Coming out of the half, Mystic penalties and ball handling issues were too much to overcome, and resulted in Worcester scoring three unanswered tries, taking the lead to 32-7. While the Barbarians would respond with an unconverted try, that is all they would be able to muster. Worcester added another try and won the match by a score of 39-12.
Next Saturday, Mystic River will be in two locations again. The Division 1 team will travel to the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA for the 2nd ARP match against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds this fall season. The Division 1 team beat the Wolfhounds a few weeks ago by a score of 29-12. The Division 2 team will be home at Pine Banks Park to host Providence in hopes of responding back with a strong win.
Upcoming Schedule:
10/22 (SAT) 1:00pm – D1/ARP at Boston Irish Wolfhounds
10/22 (SAT) 2:00pm – D2 versus Providence
