For the 3rd straight season, Mystic River Rugby Club earned a spot in the top eight DI teams in the country. This year, they defeated the Atlanta Renegades in dramatic fashion. After trailing 0-10 early on, the Mystics fought back to take a 12-10 lead behind the boot of flyhalf Paul Penman’s four penalty kicks. Atlanta answered back with two kicks of the own to retake the lead 12-16 with no time remaining. On the last play of the game, winger Nate Fox was able to storm down the sidelines shedding tackles for an emphatic try for the Mystic win 17-16!
On day two, it was a different story as the Mystics faced a strong Metropolis side who jumped out to an early 0-15 lead before Mystic was able to get on the board with a great series of exchanges that saw winger Lance Gaines touch down what would be their only points on the day. Metropolis would go on to score another two tries in the second half to put the game away 5-30.
It was a season of highly exceeded expectations from a young Mystic side that scrapped and clawed their way to victories in the face of injuries and adversity. The boys should be congratulated on a very successful season! Best of luck to Metropolis in the Final Four!
